Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
