Toto Wolff is in final negotiations to offload part of his shareholding in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction values Mercedes at £4.6bn – a record for an F1 team – following McLaren was appraised at £3.5 billion in a change of ownership structure last September.

Wolff, who owns a 33% stake of Mercedes F1, plans to divest a shareholding in the region of 5%.

The 53-year-old will remain as team principal and CEO should the deal proceed.

Ownership Breakdown

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who both hold one-third of the enterprise.

An official representative stated: "We are providing no official statement on the matter. The management structure of Mercedes F1 stays unaltered, and each shareholder are dedicated to the ongoing success of the brand in F1."

Financial Growth

The deal signifies a substantial rise in value of the Mercedes team after Ineos Group bought its stake for £208 million in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the growth in valuations of F1 teams in the past few years due to the growing popularity of the sport globally.

This trend was evident with the success of the F1 movie featuring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and earned more than $630 million (£458m) at the box office.

The film represents Pitt's most successful movie and the most successful sports film ever released.

Present Standings

The Mercedes team are second in the team standings, trailing McLaren, with three races left this season.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 races so far and is fourth in the individual standings after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a record eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
