No fewer than 13 people perish and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” declared the national leader.

The president announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a full safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
