The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
